Following last year’s highly successful Philadelphia Orchestra 2013 Residency and 40th Anniversary Tour of China, one of the most respected orchestra’s in the world is coming back to dazzle audiences in Macau once again.

“Anyone who loves music thrills at the opportunity to watch and listen live to one of the greatest orchestras in the world. No matter what continent we are on, when we finish our concerts the reaction is always the same: passionate and wild applause!” said David Kim, Concertmaster for The Philadelphia Orchestra, ahead of their performance in Macau at the end of May.

The orchestra returns to perform at the Venetian Theatre for ‘The Philadelphia Orchestra 2014 China Residency & Tour of Asia – Macao’ on Friday, May 30. On the following night, they will team up with the Macao Orchestra to play another distinct programme for ‘The Philadelphia Orchestra and Macao Orchestra Together in Concert’.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is touring major cities in mainland China including Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and Shenzhen, as well as attending engagements in Taiwan and Japan. In addition to hosting two performances in Macau, the orchestra will also play two community events supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, giving locals and people of different communities the chance to enjoy the performance of one of the world’s best orchestras, including a chamber performance at Macau’s historic Dom Pedro V Theatre for individuals with visual impairments and local music students.

Wholly committed to the exploration of classical music and repertoire, The Philadelphia Orchestra was formed in 1900, and has distinguished itself through a century of acclaimed performances, historic international tours, and best-selling recordings.

Touching the lives of more than one million music lovers worldwide through its live performances (playing more than 300 concerts and other presentations each year), publications, recordings, and broadcasts, the effect the music has is universal.

“It is the most uncomplicated and pure form of art that speaks to all people. Hearts and souls are stirred regardless of politics or any other differences. We consider it a great privilege to bring our unique brand of music to our many fans in China and Macau”, says David Kim.

Widely recognized for his musicianship, dedication, and charisma, music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will make his inaugural tour with the world-renowned orchestra with the 2014 Residency and Tour of Asia. Having established himself as a musical leader of the highest calibre and one of the most exciting talents of his generation, he continues his inspired leadership as the eighth music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra – a tunure that began in the fall of 2012.

Besides featuring Nézet-Séguin, the 2014 Residency and Tour of Asia includes the orchestra’s two newest musicians – both of Chinese heritage. Associate concertmaster Ying Fu joined the orchestra at the start of the 2013-14 season. The Shanghai native started to learn violin at age 3 and studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before going to the U.S. to continue his studies and perform professionally. Violinist Li Yiying joined the orchestra in January 2014, having begun her formal violin lessons at age 7 in Beijing with Shengyin Huang at the Central Conservatory before her family moved to the U.S.

The Philadelphia Orchestra made history as the first American orchestra to perform in China, in 1973 at the request of President Richard Nixon, and today boasts a new partnership with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

Playing Dvořák, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, amongst others, audiences are in for a genuine experience according to the concertmaster.

“I am so pleased that we are performing repertoire that is at the core of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s rich tradition: Smetana’s “The Moldau”, Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. The famous Philly romanticism and our lush string sound will be on full display!”
