The Macao Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents three brand new productions to be premiered in February 2017. Staged in alternative venues, this new “Open Box” series includes the physical comedy Idiot, multimedia project Butterflies in the Spring Breeze and the vanguardist immersive theatre Echoes of our Times – a theatrical display of different ideas and themes presented through diverse performing projects.
“Open Box” is presented by the Macao Cultural Centre from February 10 through 19. Tickets priced at MOP120 will be available at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing Network from December 18. IDIOT The art of defying logic
Using the basics of clowning to construct an absurd perspective, director/scriptwriter Joyce Chan will take us on a journey to a world of stupidity and misunderstandings. Red noses and masks aside, it all starts when one day a young otaku (Japanese for nerd) decides to reply to an ad calling for male escorts. The action revolves around a multiplicity of funny gags during the interview that sees the unlikely candidate fly to Japan where he meets the mama-san in charge of recruitment. Willing to expose weaknesses and share awkwardness, the performers appear on stage stripped of common sense, yet determined to reveal beauty and happiness through sheer, joyful nonsense.

ECHOES OF OUR TIMES Talking wrecks
Let’s wander through a strange place full of dusty and unwanted objects that were once very useful. Listening to unfamiliar beeps and noises, two dancers respond to the sounds, like mesmerized kids listening to a story told by an old man. As we move closer, a gadget starts murmuring. This will not be a usual night. Echoes of our Times merges dance, acting and sound installations offering something closer to a real life adventure rather than an evening at the theatre. Choreographer Chan Chi Cheng joins Taiwanese sound designer Chi Po Hao to take on the thrilling task of bringing the audience on stage. We will find ourselves mingling with a random group of people, standing very close to professional dancers. Allow yourself to be drawn in by this immersive production, living an astonishing experience in a very surprising way.

BUTTERFLIES IN THE SPRING BREEZE
Colourful love, old stories
In a bold gaze on sexuality, Butterflies in the Spring Breeze brings us a technically challenging piece conceived to deconstruct taboos. Created by director Harry Ng and designer James Wong, this production tells the story of a man who finds out his wife had a love affair with another woman, years before they met. This adaptation of a Taiwanese novel will take the audience through an acting experience displayed on a high-tech holographic scenario. Anchored on intense video effects, this contemporary narrative reaches into our intimacy, triggering reflections on the different colours of sexual desire.
