Redfoo makes a splash

SPLASH Pool Party returns to City of Dreams with world phenomenon LMFAO’s Redfoo and actress Jennifer Tse Ting-ting
by
The region’s longest running pool party, SPLASH, presented by City of Dreams, will be bringing the crazy antics and vocal talent of the 30-million-album-selling pop dance sensation LMFAO, to the pool in Macau this summer. On July 11, Redfoo will be joined by DJs and dancers from his La Freak and Party Rock Crew at the Hard Rock Hotel poolside. Adding to the pool party mix will be the globetrotting dance floor illuminator Tim Mason from the UK, as well as Hong Kong’s deep house music explosion Arun R, and actress Jennifer Tse Ting-ting.

Bursting onto the world stage as the creative half and front man of the electronic pop-rock duo LMFAO, Redfoo has scored Number 1 hits in more than 30 countries. His sound reflects a new movement in music, and has catapulted him to superstar status, enabling him to collaborate with other major artists like Kanye West, Pitbull, will.i.am, Lil Jon, as well as fellow DJs David Guetta and Steve Aoki. He even performed alongside Madonna at the 2012 Super Bowl half time show.

With more than 1.6 billion YouTube views, Redfoo is one of the hottest names on the planet. He has appeared as a judge on X Factor Australia, headlined for the hippest mega clubs and started his own clothing label La Freak and independent record label Party Rock.

CLOSER spoke to the superstar ahead of the big party.

Macau CLOSER – How did growing up in a musical family affect your choice of genres? You could have made any kind of music you wanted, so how did you end up where you did?
Redfoo: The music I grew up listening to and the music in my family was mostly fun dance music with great stories that influenced me greatly. Music for me was, when you wanted to feel good you put on some music. That’s what I like to make, feel-good music.

How much time is spent on coming up with new concepts versus time spent refining the concepts?
Refining the concept always takes longer. The concept can come out of nowhere, just like a vision. Coming up with a concept doesn’t take a lot of time. It’s not easy but it’s more like something happens in my real life… I hear a phrase or experience something that inspires a concept. From there the process begins, then I take that idea and bring it to final product which could take anywhere from three days to three months.

What genre of music resonates the most with you?  What do you keep on coming back to time and time again?
Funky, funky dance music.

You toured Asia for the first time in 2011. What was your most memorable crazy cross-cultural interaction?
The craziest thing was when I saw a young girl riding a solo wheel in China. I had never seen anything like that in my life. I was so inspired and bought them to ride around while on tour. People saw us riding these solowheels and were amazed because they had never even seen anything like them. It was incredible seeing people watching us ride this wheel that we had first seen in China.

From a DJ point of view, what are the essential elements to throwing a great party?
The essential thing for throwing a great party is having lots of energy, interacting with the crowd, and definitely taking shots!

And what are you planning for this Splash Party?
Oh we’re getting into it baby! I’m excited to play my first ever pool party in Asia at Splash, City of Dreams. I hear it’s the biggest and the most talked about event in Asia and I can’t wait to get down there with the Party Rock & La Freak Crew.  This party is going to be crazy and it’s going to get wild with party people. The crowd can expect champagne showers, incredible music, and I’m definitely jumping in the pool, that’s for sure.

You have built up a lot of television experience, being a judge on a number of different shows. What has been the most valuable experience you have taken away from that as a performer?
Getting comfortable thinking of things on the spot or improv. Also, I recently started hosting a new show on MTV called Say It In Song about individuals who use the lyrics of today’s popular songs to deliver a personal message to their friend or loved one.  I actually wrote two songs for the album that came out from just being silly on the piano getting ready for the show.

If you could spend the next six months learning a new kind of instrument, a new kind of music, or collaborating with someone new, who or what would it be?
If I could figure out a way to create music while playing tennis that would be the ultimate musical invention for me!
