Earlier this year the Live Music Association (LMA) lost its home of six years. But just three months later it found a new venue, and since moving in in August, they have already hosted a number of performances by great international indie bands including Tempers (US), Blue Hawaii (Canada), Taragana Pyjarama (Denmark) and Bottled in England (Denmark).
And with their new venue comes new plans for the future.
“We will strive to connect local audiences to a broader spectrum of music from emerging bands overseas on a more regular basis,” says the president of the LMA, Vincent Cheang, commonly known as G Tat. “Meanwhile we’ll keep supporting inspirational professional musicians to use their talents for the benefit of those who want to experience live music,” he adds.
At their opening party in August, the association brought in FM3 from Beijing, dadahack from the UK, MatchBox from Hong Kong, The Muff from Zhuhai, and Forget the G and LAVY from Macau.
With a total area of 1,600 square feet and space for around 150 people, the new venue may be smaller than before, but it is still a great place for bands to hold concerts and rehearsals.
“Even though it’s not as spacious as the previous one, it will be easier to create a warm and friendly atmosphere for both bands and the audience to get in the mood,” says Cheang. “We can get closer to the audience and this will help engage them to enjoy our music.”
More than just concerts, LMA’s events are great parties.
“It is definitely exciting when we have a full house. All like-minded people gathering here in this go-to place for indie music in Macau, inside an industrial building. Everyone can easily get to know each other both before and during the concerts,” Cheang explains.
As the only non-profit organisation that aims to promote live music performances in Macau, LMA has worked with a very diverse range of local people that would otherwise rarely have an opportunity to perform or experience live music.
Created by a group of Macau-based live music enthusiasts, including musicians, sound technicians and lighting technicians in 2008, LMA has organised frequent concerts over the years, offering a platform to local bands and bringing overseas music gigs to Macau for great evenings of very unique shows.
