Known as the “Oscars of Asia”, the 8th Asian Film Awards was hosted in Macau for the first time last month. Over a hundred stars and cinematic talents graced the glittering red carpet to attend the award ceremony held in the Dancing Water Theater at City of Dreams.
Before the ceremony, A-listers including Zhang Ziyi, Carina Lau, Paw Hee Ching, Odagiri Joe, Lee Kang Sheng, Tsai Ming-liang, Song Kang ho and Han Hyo-joo posed for more than 300 international and regional media representatives.
One of the highlights on the night was the appearance of AFA Ambassador, Jeon Do-yeon, who was crowned ‘Best Actress’ at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
AFA recognises and celebrates film achievements in Asia from the preceding year over 14 award categories.
‘The Grandmaster’ was the big winner on the night, winning ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ for director Wong Kar-wai, and five other honours. Zhang Ziyi won ‘Best Leading Actress’ for her role in the film.
As well as the awards presentation, there were several special performances including martial arts performed by The Jackie Chan Stunt Team, and Mainland China’s pop diva Zhou Bichang, also known as Bibi Zhou, who brought down the house with her powerful and soulful voice.
