Joaquim Franco and José Drummond are two of the artists with work developed in Macau taking part in the "Art Made in Zhuhai" exhibition recently opened in Zhuhai. The exhibition, which includes works by at least 36 artists, marks the opening of the "Zhuhai Art Gallery" space in the Zhuhai special economic area, bringing together an important collection of art produced over the last forty years, from 1979 to 2019, by Chinese, locally established, and foreign artists, with work developed in the region. The exhibition will remain open to the public until August 22.
Bao Zewei, born in 1957 in Shandong Province, currently living in Zhuhai, is one of the Chinese artists with work on show. Considered a master of oil painting, has been responsible for curating exhibitions. Also participating in the inauguration of the gallery are names including Ron Rocco, an American artist who has worked in New York, Rotterdam, Berlin and now in China, Zhuhai, in mediums including installation, photography, engraving, sculpture, 3D design, performance and video.
José Drummond is a Portuguese artist, a resident of Macau, who works between Zhuhai and Shanghai. Director of VAFA – International Video Art Festival of Macao, he works in film, video, photography, installation and performance. Drummond is interested in the duality between visibility and invisibility and in the space between fantasy and reality. Love, loss, loneliness, dreams and failure are some of the most common themes in a body of work that is existential by nature.
Joaquim Franco, who lived in Macau for about 30 years, develops abstract work. He exhibited for the first time in 1976, in an individual show in Ericeira, Portugal. Since then, he has participated in several solo and group exhibitions. He is the artist of the mural covering part of the Tak Chun Macau Art Garden building, an exhibition space of the Association Art For All Society (AFA).
