A Long Day

by
The Macao Museum of Art (MAM) recently opened the exhibition Zhao Zhao: A Long Day. Located on the first floor of the museum, the exhibition, curated by Cui Cancan, presents a representative selection of 82 pieces/sets of works by Zhao Zhao, a contemporary artist of the new generation of China, including paintings, installations, sculptures and studies on ancient culture dating from 2006 to the present. This is the first solo exhibition of the Chinese artist in Macau.

“The aim is to present the marks of civilisation left by ancient Chinese culture in today’s world, illustrating the relationship between ‘past and present’ and between ‘East and West’,” the Cultural Institutes (IC) announced. “Visitors will have the opportunity to perceive the artist’s deep and comprehensive cultural background, both in the area of ancient and modern culture, and his pluralistic considerations on art. Linking works that highlight the constant exploration of issues associated with time, space and our era, the exhibition aims to make visitors aware of Zhao Zhao’s unique artistic ideas, as well as his new creative methods and his use of various means of expression.”

Among the works on display, a highlight is a new set of works created by Zhao Zhao especially for this exhibition, A Long Day: AM. In response to the exhibition’s theme, the artist has produced 12 cotton pieces with variations of light and shade, corresponding to the movement and passage of the 12 hours of a day, from midnight to noon, as well as to the passage of space-time and history, reflected throughout the exhibition.

Zhao Zhao was born in Xinjiang province in northwestern China in 1982. He graduated with a BFA from Xinjiang Institute of Arts in the department of Oil Painting in 2003. Zhao Zhao’s multidisciplinary body of work is an inspection of China’s contemporary profile, and the political consequences of individual human action. The artist has been working in various media, including but not limited to video, photography, performance and installations incorporating found objects. The refusal of material limitations demonstrates his reflexive intensification of a dialogue with and within each technique. Zhao Zhao was highlighted in 2014 by Modern Painters magazine as one of 25 artists to watch out for around the world and received the Artist of the Year Award as part of the 13th China Art Prize in 2019.

“Zhao Zhao has created his own artistic style and working method to give expression to human life in today’s global environment and our reality in modern society, also showing his attitude towards the coexistence of collectivism and individual ideals,” IC said.

The exhibition will be on view until 30 October, during which time public guided tours will be available on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays. MAM is open daily, including public holidays, from 10am to 7pm (last admission at 6.30pm), and closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
