A Lasting Rapport

by

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and France. To celebrate the occasion, the 22nd edition of Le French May will present a selection of performances, exhibitions and screenings in Hong Kong and Macau, from May 2 to June 28

Le French May 2014 aims to explore the similarities between both cultures, showcasing the best of Franco-Chinese cultural dialogues. With over 120 events spanning two months in both Hong Kong and Macau, Le French May is one of the most diversified festivals in Asia: from exhibitions and performances to cinema and gastronomy.

The main attraction coming to Macau are the 12 masterpieces from various French National Collections, from the most prestigious museums in France – Musée du Louvre, Musée d´Orsay, Château de Versailles et le Centre Pompidou. Works from the 16th to the 20th centuries by names such as Renoir, Matisse, Monet, Miró and Picasso will be on display at the Macau Museum of Art from June 27 to September 7.

Another attraction brought to the territory by the Festival is the Biennial of the Lions – the animal that represents the city of Lyons.  Jointly presented with MGM Macau, it features as many as 50 lion sculptures created by French and Chinese contemporary artists, on display from June until October 12.

The cinema programme ‘French Shadows, All Eyes on China’ will be showing French films about China and films by Chinese directors shot in France, including the Macau premier of “The Nightingale” by Philippe Muyl, who will be attending the screening. A total of seven films will be screened at the UA Galaxy Cinemas, from May 30 through to June 1.

In partnership with the Macau Arts Festival, Le French May will be welcoming Julien Cottereau, a former Cirque du Soleil clown and mime artist. His performance of “Imagine Toi” will take place at D. Pedro V Theatre from May 23 to 25.

And what would a French festival be without gourmet menus and wine pairings? Various local restaurants including Michelin-starred chefs and wine merchants have partnered with Le French May for the essential Gourmet part of the festival.
