Ten years after being in Macau to shoot the film ‘Butterfly’, in which she was one of the leading actresses, Tian Yuan came back to the city last month for a special screening of the movie at Macau Tower and to perform at The Script Road Concerts.

Tian is well known to local moviegoers for her award-winning screen debut as the on-screen lesbian love interest of fellow actress Josie Ho in the 2004 film.

The movie is a brave attempt by the contemporary Hong Kong film industry, simply because it relies on viewers having open minds and being willing to accept new story-telling styles.

Before filming the movie, Tian had heard a lot of talk about Macau and she always wanted to see the real face of the city.

“It is said that Hong Kong people often come to Macau for cuisine and entertainment, as well as to have love affairs. That was my first impression of Macau,” she said.

Ten years have passed, but Tian still feels that Macau is as a nostalgic and romantic a place as it was when she was here filming.

“Life is a miracle. I really want to thank director Yan Yan, otherwise I couldn’t be here today. It was like a dream. It happened when I was just a teenager. And now I’m much older, it’s like my dreams have become a reality,” she said.

“There were painful stages in between. But back then I was so innocent and so young. I didn’t even know where the camera was when I was acting in that film. And now I’m directing myself. The best is yet to come, I guess.”

Tian began her musical career in 2001 at the tender age of 16, fronting the acclaimed band Hopscotch. Equally at home writing novels and singing in English or Mandarin, Tian released her self-titled solo debut album in 2010 with a collection of songs in both languages.

Opening the second night of concerts at The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival, at the Venetian Arena, the singer delivered a stunning performance. Following on from her performance came an powerful show by Omnipotent Youth Society, one of China’s best contemporary bands.
