Macau audiences will have an opportunity to experience some of the very best new Arabic sounds, when Marcel Khalife steps on stage at the Macau Cultural Centre in June, for a great evening of musical exoticism and thrilling skill. Dubbed as one of the most prolific contemporary Arabic musicians, the Lebanese singer and oud master has been acclaimed world-wide for his avant-garde compositions and wistful optimism.
Born and raised in a region shaken by a long war, Khalife never stopped dreaming about peaceful reconciliation in a multi-religious society. His contributions to the promotion of arts and culture have earned him recognition through numerous prizes such as the Palestine Award for Music, in 1999, UNESCO’s Artist for Peace, awarded in 2005 and the Académie Charles Cros Award in 2007.
His quest for the renovation of the Arabic song has been recorded on various albums, breaking stereotypes, singing the words of great contemporary Arab poets, notably the Palestinian Mahmoud Darwish. Amongst numerous lyrical and instrumental features, Khalife has produced music for dance and soundtracks for both documentary and fiction films.
From Morocco’s World Sacred Music Fes Festival, to Sweden’s Re Orient, Khalife has been invited to festivals around the world, while his compositions too have caught the ear of reputed musical ensembles. His scores have been interpreted by the likes of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Oman Symphony, amongst many others.
Combining the oud tradition with classical, jazz and folk idioms, Marcel Khalife’s concert is a unique opportunity for music lovers to grasp and enjoy a reinvented musical universe, merging the best of Middle-eastern and Western sounds. Brought to us as a genuine message of goodwill, this master musician’s work will leave a long lasting imprint on our memory.
The artist sometimes referred as the Lebanese Bob Dylan, who once performed amidst the rubble of bombed-out buildings, is traveling with a bag bursting with what he does best: Declarations of love in songs for unity.
