Four Score

by
Renowned for their passionate musicality, impressive techniqe and multicultural innovations, the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles.  Returning for the first time since their Macau debut in 2006, the Quartet will perform their music at local cultural landmark Dom Pedro V Theatre, as part of the programme of the 28th Macao International Music Festival.

The Shanghai Quartet’s elegant style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire, allowing it to traverse musical genres including traditional Chinese folk music, masterpieces of Western music and cutting-edge contemporary works.

Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the most prominent, exciting and refined chamber ensembles on the classical stage today. The Shanghai Quartet is made up of four key members: first violinist Weigang Li, second violinist Yi-Wen Jiang, violist Honggang Li, and cellist Nicholas Tzavaras.

First violinist Weigang Li has been a soloist with the Asian Youth Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and he was involved in the film From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China in the 1980s.

Second violinist Yi-Wen Jiang has performed a soloist with the Victoria Symphony and Montreal Symphony. He has also appeared on NBC and PBS television specials, has won prizes at the Mae M. Whitaker and Montreal competitions and has collaborated with Alexander Scheider, Michael Tree, Jaime Laredo, and Lynn Harrell on performances.

Violinist Honggang Li has been a soloist with the Shanghai Philharmonic and won at the Premio Paolo Borciani Competition in Italy by Elisa Pegreffi.

Meanwhile, cellist Nicholas Tzavaras is the only American member of the Shanghai Quartet. Raised in Harlem in New York City, he appeared in the academy award nominated documentary Small Wonders and in the major motion picture Music of the Heart with Meryl Streep.

Over the years, The Shanghai Quartet have been a regular performer at many of North America’s leading chamber music festivals, including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Chamberfest Ottawa and Maverick Concerts where they recently made their 24th consecutive annual appearance. The group’s tours have included North America, South America, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Hailed by The Washington Post for their “wonderfully ferocious and illuminating performances,” the ensemble has collaborated with virtually all the leading artists of today, including Yo-Yo Ma, David Soyer, Eugenia Zukerman, Sharon Isbin, Ruth Laredo, Arnold Steinhardt, and Chanticleer.

In Macau, the Shanghai Quartet will proudly perform Poland’s greatest living composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s masterpiece, Leaves of an Unwritten Diary, alongside string quartets by Haydn and Schubert.
