Foshan joins the party

Music festivals are springing up in cities around the Delta, and this month the first edition of the Foshan Expat Town International Music Festival is set to join the action.

The number of music festivals in Hong Kong, Macau, Zhuhai and Shenzhen has grown – and now its Foshan’s turn to join the party, with an event organised by Creative Park Foshan, also known as Expat Town, which since 2007, has been transforming a former industrial area into a new space dedicated to the creative industries and trade.

In this first edition of the festival, Macau indie-rock band Turtle Giant are one of the headlining acts. Brothers Beto and Fredji Ritchie together with António Conceição are preparing to return to the studio soon.  At the festival, they will perform songs from their back catalogue such as the EP “All Hidden Places” and their first album, “Feel to Believe”, and there is also a chance they will perform some new material from their forthcoming album.

High Rollers are the other representatives from Macau at this first edition of the music festival. Composed of expatriates who have chosen Macau as their home, High Rollers specialise in playing covers with Mike Won on guitar, José António da Silva on drums and Carlos Veloso and Billy da’ Kidd on vocals and guitar. Together they have played their rock’ n’ roll and blues in a number of different cities around the Pearl River Delta area.

Irishman Phil O’Flaherty is also set to perform at the festival. Having immigrated to Canada as a child in the 1990s, he later created the band Scatter the Mud, a collective that maintained O’Flaherty’s Celtic influences. Now with a solo career, the singer-songwriter has released a debut album entitled “Too Fond of Walking”, a mixture of traditional and original Irish songs.

As the festival carries on into the night, DJ Slim Buddah will be responsible for the beats. A DJ who has played clubs in his native France and also in cities such as London, Berlin, Prague and Macau, Slim Buddah came to China in 2009, first to live in Sanya, and later in Zhuhai, where he is currently artistic director of the Beishan International Jazz Festival.
