Mini Arts

by

People generally have an expectation of the size of paintings. But art works come in great and small. Even a small card can contain the artistic universe in the mind of the artist.

The MMM Workshop & JUJU Studio will present the Mini Game 2016 Miniature Art Exhibition between December 7 and 30. It features around 300 3cm x 3 cm mini paintings created by 10 artists. The subjects in the paintings include racing cars, cartoon characters and animals.

Local artist Filipe Dores is the curator of the exhibition. He reveals that not all the paintings in the exhibition are created by professional artists. Some of the painters are actually people from other professions or Macau students studying overseas.

In fact, these miniature paintings were created as a daily routine by the participants since 2014, which allowed painters to record their thoughts over time. Eventually, they accumulated a considerable amount of outstanding paintings.

At first, they were hoping to organize an exhibition a year after the commencement of the "little practice", but were unable to find a suitable venue.

Describing the origin of these miniature artistic creations, Filipe says that the practice was for the alleviation of artists' burdens, and to allow them to paint whatever came to their minds.

"Many artists have already established their style, or are closely associated with a particular topic. These can be oil paintings, the paintings of buildings or people. However, there are actually ideas and thoughts they want to express. There are also childhood memories they want to revisit, such as famous paintings and cartoon characters they tried to draw before. These are fond memories for them, but they can no longer draw these things because they are restricted by their current styles. That's why we want to relieve ourselves through this (little practice)".

Moreover, the creation of these miniature paintings has been beneficial for the amateur painters in the exhibition as well, because the difficulty level is lower, while the feeling more satisfying.

All paintings in this exhibition are for sale, each of them costing MOP300. Filipe believes it is a very reasonable price for locals who want to acquire their first piece of art. He hopes that this can help to promote artistic creation among local residents.
