Linear paintings, depicting the contours of contemporary buildings, and showing the transcription of spatial values are the focus of ‘Invisible Gateway’, an exhibition by Portuguese artist Pedro Besugo at the Iao Hin Gallery.
Besugo defines himself as a travelling artist and a contemporary globe-trotter. In his work, the use of valuable antique maps from Europe and vintage maps locally sourced in Macau, constitutes a collection of images that convey the emotional impact when the artist first arrived in Macau a year ago.
“I felt excited, lost, love, desire for change, open to influences, wonder and most importantly, hope,” says Besugo. “Everything is ephemeral and changes with the passage of time, and thus I’m walking on the path of life that is subject to changes.”
The exhibition is all about architecture, structures and invisible spaces and Besugo creates for himself an imaginary route through the use of maps that draws on the aesthetic and philosophy behind cartography. His work maintains a universal appeal by tapping into fundamental human emotions.
Born in Portugal in 1971, he studied Image and Audio Visual Communication at the School of Arts Antonio Arroio, Lisbon and obtained a Master’s in Visual Arts in Teaching from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon.
'Invisible Gateway' is on display at the Iao Hin Gallery until July 12. Iao Hin Gallery is located at 39a Rua de Tercena, Macau.
