A Dream Performance

by

The winner of the East Asia Music Macau New Star Contest in 2007, as well as a number of other awards, Sean Pang is no stranger to music lovers in Macau.

“I’m a Cantonese pop singer and I’m happy to blend different elements into my music, the result of which might be surprising and inviting,” the celebrated performer says of his style. “Music is a universal language that connects us and expresses our emotions.”

As part of the 28th Macao International Music Festival, Pang will have the opportunity to take to the stage with a performer he has always greatly admired, Hong Kong-based Cantopop singer, actor and songwriter, George Lam. Lam’s songs, such as Judge Bao and Mystery, have been famous for over 20 years.

“I’ll perform two songs in the show as a guest singer. One is solo and the other is an old love song that I’ll sing with Lam. It’s a great challenge as well as a golden opportunity to sing on the same stage with him. Lam is a singing master who we all, as artists, wish to work with and learn from (many singer dreams to be him). I’m honoured to sing with him on behalf of Macao’s singers.”

'The Macao Chinese Orchestra Invites George Lam' will see a string of hits performed such as, Every Starry Night, The Trio and Real Man, amongst others.

In addition to the honour of performing with an artist as celebrated as Lam, Pang is very excited about performing with the Macao Chinese Orchestra. “It’s my first time working with the Macao Chinese Orchestra and I’m looking forward to it. I’m sure it’s going to be great fun.”

The Macao Chinese Orchestra has collaborated with a number of famous pop singers, combining the worlds of pop music and traditional Chinese music to great acclaim. Under the baton of its Principal Conductor and Music Director Pang Ka Pang, the combination of the two celebrated singers is guaranteed to give audiences a performance to remember.

The guest singer from Macao is aware of the technical challenges that lie ahead, but confident about the outcome. “The song A Choice, originally by Sally Ip and George Lam, is really challenging and takes lots of skill and power. I’m so thrilled but I won’t feel stressed. I’ll just do my best and enjoy the process. I’ll have my own elements fused and let audience sense my being in the song.”

Pang is proud of the strides local music is making.

“As a local singer working outside Macau, I think that nowadays there are many chances given to local young talent either under the spotlight or backstage. Also, there are a substantial number of locals striving in the music world locally and abroad as pioneers for many years, and their efforts have made many regions aware of the fact that Macao has its own music.”

“There are now many pubs or entertainment centres that allow young people to gain performance experience and some of them are already well prepared.  What they need is a chance to shine.”

“Macao is where I grew up. I love to perform here when I get the chance.”
