The 1st Macao International Documentary Film Festival is coming from April 22 to May 1 at Cinemateque Passion. Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa will be the Director-in-Focus
Macau is welcoming another arts festival, this time devoted to documentary cinema. The 1st Macao International Documentary Film Festival, organized by Communa de Han Ian Association, will feature 17 films, from April 22 to May 1, at Cinemateque Passion.
A wide number of awarded documentaries from around the world are part of the programme, including Jafar Panahi’s Taxi, Golden Bear winner at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2015; Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence, nominated for an Oscar in 2016; Yung Chang’s China Heavyweight, winner of the Golden Horse Film Festival Best Documentary Award; and the moving Taiwanese box-office success Wansei Back Home, by Huang Ming-cheng.
“All of the selected films start from the viewpoint of the directors; documenting stories of themselves, their families, friends or neighbors, or tracing back through their own memories. The Festival hopes that the audience can view our world through their most personal stories,” the organizers state.
Internationally renowned Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa will be featured as the Director-in-Focus, with the screening of three of his most iconic works (see the Full Programme in these pages). Costa will be visiting Macau for a master class, sharing how he forms his unique language in filmmaking.
Golden Horse Award winning director Cheung King Wai will also attend the Festival for the Macau Premiere of his new film, The Taste of Youth. This will only be the film’s second screening worldwide, after its international premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.
