French artist Christian Gaillard’s passion for bullfighting is something he takes to the canvas in a new solo show in Hong Kong from October 16 to 28, his works bringing some of this Southern French tradition closer to home.

Born in 1951 in Avignon, France, Christian Gaillard is renowned for his portraits of some of the greatest living matadors in the world.

“De Luz”, which means “Of Light” in Spanish, is derived from the term “Traje de Luz” or “Suit of Light” which refers to the custom-made costumes worn by toreros or bullfighters.  They are often embroidered with silver or golden thread inspired by 18th century Andalusian clothing. The subject is close to Gaillard’s heart, as bullfighting is a tradition and integral part of the culture in the South of France where he grew up, and his fascination lies in showcasing the bravery, heroism and state of mind of the matadors.

Gaillard has been awarded numerous prestigious honours and was the first non-Spaniard to win First Prize at the Real Maestranza de Caballeria de Sevilla in Spain, a prestigious historical institution of the Royal Cavalry. The award was presented by S.A.R. Don Juan de Bourbon, father of the King of Spain.

Gaillard rarely paints his matadors from the front. Rather, he paints them from the back or side profile, so that their richly and brilliantly coloured “suits of light” stand out against a faded background of mystery. This echoes and allows one to imagine the hidden emotions and tensions of the matador as he prepares to step into the arena. It is also the style of the matador and the courage he displays, by turning his back on the bull to demonstrate his mastery over the animal.
