On July 16, the MGM Special Exhibition Awakening was officially opened at The Spectacle at MGM Cotai. Earlier on the same day, the Greater Bay Area Art Symposium – Contemporary Dialogues of Chinese Culture Awakening was also held in the MGM Theater. Guest speakers include Ms. Pansy Ho, Co-Chairperson and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited (online participation), and the curator of Awakening Calvin Hui, director of the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Wang Huangsheng and renowned contemporary Chinese artists Liu Guofu and Xue Song.

In addition to these important names in the field of Chinese contemporary culture and art, nearly 300 audience members also attended, mainly from the local cultural and arts sector. The symposium was held for the first time in a combination of online and offline formats, with the live broadcast attracting more than 1.3 million people to watch.

Opening the forum, Ms Pansy Ho took the lead to speak on the big screen of the MGM Theater, introducing MGM’s use of art as its main strategy since 2013, combining tourism, hospitality and contemporary art, and contributing to the development of cultural tourism in Macau. She also explored how to deepen the exchanges of cultural tourism in the Greater Bay Area and promote its high-quality development in humanity and culture through the launch of the MGM Lion IP Program, which the Special Exhibition Awakening is the very first project of this Program series.

Talking about the theme of this special exhibition, Ms. Ho said, "The country’s status on the international stage is growing now, just like a waking lion, our cultural identity and national self-confidence have to be actively promoted. So I hope that through this series of activities, we are stimulated to further consider what methods and angles should be used to drive the people's true cultural awakening."

Calvin Hui, curator of Awakening, also observed that since working with MGM from 2015, he and his curatorial team have been committed to integrating art and culture in public spaces. During this process, the team has been reflecting on how art can be presented as a public sharing medium, and what conversations and thinking can public art encourage and enhance. The curator shared his insights accumulated over the years, noting that by combining the artistic and cultural brand with a cultural vision, his team aims to create new expressive cultural symbols and concepts.

Later in the symposium artists Xue Song and Liu Guofu both introduced their works for the MGM Special Exhibition Awakening. Last but not least, the forum returned to more local discussions in cultural planning. Director of the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Wang Huangsheng proposed clear and far-reaching suggestions.

“The development of culture and art in the Greater Bay Area requires hard work in the areas of culture, economy, policy, and administrative planning. The research work between private sectors and the government is very important. The independence and power of MGM is significant. By cooperating with the government, we can create a culturally insightful image.”
