Mid last year, Lisboeta Macau opened in Cotai, bringing a host of new dining, retail and entertainment offerings to the city, in a unique locally-themed setting. Expanding these offerings to the world of art, in December, Lisboeta Macau launched a number of new initiatives, designed to create platforms for cultural and artistic exchanges, through contemporary art exhibitions and interactive activities.
The first such initiative, “Lisboeta Neighbourhood”, aims to promote the development of the art and culture industry in Macau and reach out to audiences from the Greater Bay Area through organising a variety of activities, including workshops, artwork displays and exhibitions.
Two events under this program were inaugurated on December 22 – the interactive art activity “IT’S ALL ABOUT FUN” and the first “Chinese and International Pop-Up Art Alliance – Super Art Fair”.
Curated by Mr. Lui Chak Keong, the interactive art activity welcomed all visitors to jointly create the first artwork of Lisboeta Macau, entitled “IT’S ALL ABOUT FUN” by simply throwing paint-soaked coloured balls onto a large canvas.
On the same day, the first “Chinese and International Pop-Up Art Alliance – Super Art Fair” was unveiled, featuring around 200 works of art, including contemporary art, avant-garde and limited editions of co-branded art pieces, creating a platform for showcasing the vitality and perspective of the younger generation of artists in China and Macau. Artworks by renowned artists Takashi Murakami and Benrei Huang are also on display around the shopping mall to allow visitors experience the vibrant artistic environment at Lisboeta Macau.
“We hope these two art events can demonstrate the capability and advantages of Lisboeta Macau in terms of contributing to the development of art and culture in Macau and the Greater Bay Area, and to build a bridge for local artists to go towards the whole country,” Ms. Connie Kong, Director of Lisboeta Macau said at the opening ceremony. “By forming new possibilities of collaboration in art and culture, and actively discovering new talented artists and their works, we can advance the development of culture and art in Macau and the Greater Bay Area. "
Mr. Hua Yuzhou
Mr. Hua Yuzhou, Curator of the Super Art Fair, said, “The aim of this exhibition is to attract the young people of Macau to come to an exhibition with vanguard and contemporary artworks. Lisboeta Macau has incorporated many cultural and art elements into it, from its content to its design, and I think this exhibition is very much in line with the character of the property.”
Also in December, Lisboeta Macau presented the inaugural exhibition of contemporary Chinese artists “The Journey Begins: From H853 to Contemporary Art”, at the Humarish Club, an international gallery at H853 Shopping Mall. This highly anticipated exhibition aims to present the works of China's most influential artists to Macau audiences, and initially features the works of leading Chinese artists including Zhou Chunya, Ding Yi, Xue Song, Zheng Hengdong and Li Qiang.
Speaking with CLOSER about the value of artistic exchange, Mr. Hua Yuzhou commented: “I think Macau artists represent the possibility of the future, and we are hoping to have a platform to show people what talent the city has. It is also important for Macau artists to participate in overseas and Mainland Chinese large-scale events because artists can enhance one another, influence one another. I hope there are many possibilities for diversified development, creation and experimentation.”
Mr Hua also previewed upcoming artistic collaborations at Lisboeta Macau with contemporary Japanese artists.
“In February we are planning a contemporary Japanese young artists exhibition at Lisboeta Macau. These are some of the best, most popular artists in Japan. I hope they can have more interactive participation with local artists, which will be helpful for promoting and enhancing one another.”
