Colours of Autumn

The Orient Foundation and Art for All Society (AFA) have jointly organized the fourth “Autumn Salon”, a significant annual event on the local art scene, giving Macau artists a platform to communicate with both audiences and art collectors alike.  The exhibition will take place at Casa Garden starting this month and will feature works by Alice Kok, James Chu, Nick Tai, Peng Yun, Lai Sio Kit and Jose Drummond, who is also the curator.

This year’s event received 159 artworks from 43 artists, with the selection process undertaken by Drummond, two AFA representatives and an Orient Foundation delegate, with a final selection of 71 works from 29 artists that includes paintings, photography and sculptures.

Macau’s multilayered history and distinct social structure affords local artists a rich tapestry for a unique art scene, and Autumn Salon was created with this in mind. This creative adventure, now on its fourth year, has proved a success, as curator Jose Drummond notes in his introduction to the exhibition: “It is remarkable how, from an open call with a very large number of submissions, one can find novelty and brilliance in art works that cover distinct expressions and a variety of media”.

In this exhibition, newer talents have the opportunity to show their works alongside more established names.

“This a show where artists encourage us to reflect and meditate on the intimate and on the mundane, where the poetic and the conceptual live together and where the works of new vibrant voices flourish in conjunction with more established artists”, says Drummond.

The importance this event plays on the local art calendar is growing in significance, something the curator highlights in the quest to support local creative talent.

“Year after year the Autumn Salon harnesses the energy of the city, contributing to the distinctive Macau identity, while helping the art scene to dialogue and engage with it. In the heart of a rapidly changing city where urbanisation is unfolding at an unprecedented pace, we are delighted to invite people to pause for a moment and give some time to enjoy this promising showcase of fresh works from Macau artists”.

This event is partly sponsored by Secretariat of Social Affairs and Culture and Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR Government.
