Since the release of her last album, 2010’s Body Talk, the artist has been through the death of a creative partner, a breakup and depression, and it is all reflected in her latest work. Robyn has termed her new sound “soft ecstasy,” and on the track “Human Being,” the woman who once advertised herself as a heroic robot offers minimalist poetry about embracing one’s own flesh-and-blood nature.

Jam Rostron, aka Planningtorock’s, fourth album, Powerhouse, was recorded between Los Angeles, New York, London and Berlin, where the experimental pop and dance music artist now lives. Tackling themes of gender and class identity, Planningtorock, who chooses the pronoun “they,” makes their genderqueer identity as visible as possible, taking pride by turning complex topics into nimble pop hooks. Few artists can express their politics and personal life so directly.

From their formation in the late 80’s through their eleven studio LPs and two compilations, Teenage Fanclub have gone from scrappy indie underdogs, through band-most-likely-to, eventually arriving at the status they’ve held ever since: one of Britain’s most beloved cult bands.
