Come, the Light is the first official local production for the talented young award-winning director Koi-wang Chao. The story follows two lovers who have been buying Mark Six lottery tickets and choosing their birthdays and anniversary as the lucky numbers. One day they win the lottery, but it does not bring happiness, only tragedy to their strained relationship.
The film was inspired by short film assignment Chao made earlier at university. When presented with the theme of thriller for Macau Stories, he decided he wanted to explore peoples’ dark and hidden desires by revisiting and expanding on the film.
As a fan of crime fiction and Alfred Hitchcock films, Chao was excited about making a thriller movie, however, he notes that it is difficult to make thrillers due to the great amount of resources needed and issues to consider.
Chao applauds the Macau Stories programme as he believes it offers audiences a great opportunity to see a range of films made by local directors of different styles.
“By working with people of different skills and experiences including the other two directors, I was able to work on a larger scale production, which was great opportunity for me to put my knowledge and skills into practise,” he says.
He also admits that it would not have been easy to obtain funds for such a production if he had been working on his own. CUT provided significant financial support which allowed him to concentrate on the production itself. Chao particularly appreciated the freedom he was given during production process and also the opportunity to work with a professional post-production company in Taiwan.
