Blurred Boundaries

by

The much-anticipated teamLab Supernature Macao, has officially opened at The Venetian Macao, featuring never-before-seen, cutting-edge art installations in a massive, three-dimensional space with impressive eight-metre high ceilings, and covering more than 5,000 square metres.

The permanent exhibition at The Venetian Macao’s Cotai Expo offers an amazing experience for families and visitors of all ages, allowing them to enjoy a massive world comprised of ground breaking works by art collective teamLab that aim to explore new perceptions of the world and the continuity between humans and nature. It is a ‘body immersive’ interactive experience centred around a group of works that blur the boundaries between people’s bodies and art, and represents a new generation of art where visitors can change the nature of the works in real time and directly affect outcomes through synergistic interaction.

Highlights include intriguing, constantly-changing artworks such as Valley of Flowers and People: Lost, Immersed and Reborn and Inverted Globe Graffiti Nature – Red List. These remarkable installations allow visitors to immerse their bodies in the artworks with others, influencing and becoming a part of them.

“The world is inherently based on a continuity, and all existence is part of this continuity. But when humans look around, they cannot perceive this continuity as it is,” notes teamLab Founder Toshiyuki Inoko. “Instead, they unconsciously separate and understand things in isolation. This exhibition in Macau specifically, is centered on works that create an experience of borderless continuity.”

The previously unreleased laser-based works entitled Light Sculpture – Plane Series will premiere as part of teamLab SuperNature Macau. Comprised of 11 separate ‘shows’, laser beams are used to create a mesmerising variety of light planes.

The new destination also incorporates dynamic and immersive Future Park and Athletics Forest areas. Future Park is an educational project based on the concept of collaborative creation, or co-creation, where visitors can enjoy creating the world freely with others. Meanwhile Athletics Forest is a new ‘creative athletic space’ that helps train spatial awareness. It develops the body as well as the brain based on the concept of understanding the three-dimensionality of the world through the human form.

Formed in 2001, teamLab’s international, interdisciplinary group of specialists includes artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects, whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design and the natural world. It was included in designboom's “Top 10 Art Exhibitions” every year from 2015 to 2018, and was also listed in “The World’s 100 Greatest Places 2019” by Time Magazine.

teamLab has been the subject of numerous exhibitions at venues worldwide, including New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Silicon Valley, Beijing, Taipei, and Melbourne among others. The permanent museums teamLab Borderless opened in Odaiba, Tokyo in June 2018, and teamLab Borderless Shanghai in Huangpu District, Shanghai in November 2019. teamLab’s works are in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Asia Society Museum, New York; Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, Istanbul; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and Amos Rex, Helsinki.
