On March 29, as part of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival, award-winning illustrator André Carrilho will open his new exhibition and present his latest book entitled “Inertia”, which depicts a number of cities, including Macau, through drawings made during his travels.

The book features more than 70 original images depicting numerous landscapes, from the interior of Portugal to the beaches of the Pacific, from Lisbon to Macau.

To create these works, Carrilho returned to the very basics of his art form to capture brief moments in time, collectively presented on the pages of his book.

At Christmas 2011, he began a long series of voyages and was inspired to record his journey, both visually and in short diary-like entries. This began a new branch of his work as he looked for artistic exploration and expression without the use of digital technologies, which he normally uses in his professional work.

“All drawings were made in person at the sites depicted, by hand, with pens, acrylic paints, soluble graphite and watercolors. Sometimes the constraints of the site and time required me to add some details from memory, but no photographs were used as a reference, nor any digital means of image manipulation. What is here is what I noted on the paper at the time, with no chance of correction,” explains the artist.

As he continued on his travels, Andre often felt a desire to stay in one place, a sense of inertia, but instead kept moving on to his next destination, hence the name of the exhibition and book.

André Carrilho has been working as an illustrator, graphic designer, animator and cartoonist since 1992, collaborating with the most important publications in Portugal.  He has won several national and international awards and has had his work exhibited in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, France, the Czech Republic and USA.

In 2002, he was awarded the ‘Gold Award Award for Illustration Portfolio’ by Society for News Design (USA), one of the most important awards in the world of illustration. The New Yorker, The New York Times, Word, Vanity Fair, Harper’s, The Independent on Sunday and Daily News are just some of the titles whose pages have featured his work.
