Local artist Lai Sut Weng’s solo exhibition “Interposition” is running from October 14 to November 6 at the Art Garden, 264, Av. do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues.
During the opening ceremony on the evening of October 14, the artist told CLOSER that she named the exhibition “Interposition” because it is about interposing one space into another.
“I put some joyous elements, like circuses and animals, into the space of Macau, in the hope of bringing people a feeling of happiness.”
She describes herself as “not always a happy person”, and thus encourages people to not focus merely on those issues that upset them.
“When you are walking in the streets of Macau, it might give you a cold sensation, or when you feel like you have too much pressure, you can actually shift your attention to other things around you. They can give you a sense of happiness too.”
In this exhibition, the painting that Lai likes the most is “A Glitch in Reality”. The painting shows the streets of Old Taipa with some circus elements added in.
“I love this scene very much, and it made me contemplate what I could do for it and what I could add into it. Eventually, I put an elephant into the painting, and made it look like it’s playing.”
In her new collection, there are several paintings that do not feature the square, linear elements that are typically seen in other works of Lai, like the “Circus”. Lai explains that she does not want to be limited by this style, and this prompted her to create these paintings.
Meanwhile, the curator of the exhibition, Lai Sio Kit reveals that he was deeply impressed by the cross-shaped brush of Lai Sut Weng the first time he saw her works three years ago in an annual joint exhibition.
“’Interposition’ is a method of creation and a metamorphosis on her carrer path. One of the artworks in the show known as ‘Time in Perspective’ is a transition work of hers: it records her change from a styled depiction to the inclination to create or express. The way of artistic creation is a long journey, and I believe that the artist is ready to keep on moving forward”, he says.
